Can't Bend Over to Put Your Socks On? Bring Your Foot Up Instead

You sit on the edge of the bed with one sock in your hand. You lean forward, and somewhere around your knees your back or your hip says no. You wait, sock dangling, and think about calling for help.

If that is your morning, you are not lazy, and you are far from the only one. The answer is usually not to bend further. It is to bring your foot up to your hands.

Try this tomorrow morning

  1. Sit on a firm bed or chair, both feet flat, bottom well back. Bunch the sock into a ring in your lap.
  2. Rest one foot on a low stool, so it comes up to your hands. Lean from your hips with your chest long, not from your back. Stop where it is comfortable.
  3. Ring over the toes, then the heel. Turn the heel pocket to face the floor first. If your back still pulls, find a taller stool.

While the foot is up, its inside edge faces you. In Vietnamese foot work that edge follows the line of your spine. Find the hollow at the top of the arch, circle gently on the tender spot for one to three minutes, and change feet. Tender is fine. Sharp means stop.

When reaching your feet is the hard part, stop straining. The Wooden Stick is light wood that sits in your whole hand, with a wide end and a small round end, so you reach your feet while your back and hands rest. You get 3 sticks for $19.99, shipping included: keep one by your chair, give two to family. There are only 97 sets. Claim your 3 Wooden Sticks now → Order by November 18 for Christmas. 30-day returns on unused tools.

One question, and one word is plenty: where does it stop you first, your lower back, a hip, or a knee?

Call your doctor first if this came on suddenly, after a fall, or with a leg that is weak or drags. If you have had a hip replaced, ask your surgeon which positions are allowed.

This is general wellness education, not medical advice. It does not replace your doctor or anything they have prescribed. If you are pregnant, take blood thinners, or have a health condition, check with your doctor before you press.
